News is Good is a weekly column featuring positive news about the LGBTQ+ community. Too much of what we see in mainstream media coverage focuses on the challenges we face and not the celebrations. Here are five things we’re excited about this week.

Sundance Film Festival to include 19 films with LGBTQ+ stories. The famed Sundance Film Festival announced its slate for 2023 and it includes nearly 20 features and shorts with LGBTQ+ characters and storylines including “Cassandro,” about a gay wrester from Mexico and “Fairyland,” a film about a gay father and his daughter in ’70s San Fransisco. Sundance takes place Jan. 19–29 in Park City, Utah.

The 2023 Golden Globe nominations include nods to LGBTQ+ actors and stories. LGBTQ+-centric “Tar” “The Whale” and “Hacks” have all been nominated for Golden Globes. Cate Blanchett and Brendon Fraser both received nominations for their leading queer roles, as did LGBTQ+ actor Emma D’Arcy for their role in “House of the Dragon.” The awards will air Jan. 10, 2023 on NBC and Peacock. LGBTQ+ Christmas musical “Holiday Out” now playing in Vancouver, Washington. Non-profit theater Metropolitan Performing Arts is currently putting on the show written by MPI team member Pip Kennedy that features a story filled with LGBTQ+ characters, including a 6’5″ magical fairy named Mary Christmas. The team at MPA hopes that the musical will help raise awareness about housing insecure and homeless LGBTQ+ youth.

Nicole Maines isn’t quite done with Dreamer yet. Maines, who starred in the now canceled “Supergirl” as television’s first transgender superhero, Dreamer, is returning with her fan-favorite character to the final season of The CW’s “The Flash.” “The Flash” is currently filming and the final season will premiere Feb. 8, 2023.

Jonathan Bennett and Jaymes Vaughan named Grand Marshalls of Miami Beach Pride. Bennett, fresh off his success of being the Hallmark Channel’s first gay male romantic lead in “The Holiday Sitter,” and podcaster and co-owner of OUTbound Travel LGBTQ+ Vaughan will be participating as Grand Marshalls April 16, 2023. The married couple will help Miami Beach Pride celebrate its 15th anniversary.
