Welcome to our weekly column, News is Good, where we feature positive news about the LGBTQ+ community. Too much of what we see in mainstream media coverage focuses on the challenges we face and not the celebrations. Here are five things we’re excited about this week.
San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria honored by Latino Leaders Network. Gloria, the first gay mayor of San Diego, was presented with the “Antonio Villaraigosa Leadership Award” at this year’s Tribute to Mayors ceremony held earlier this week. Before being elected mayor, Gloria served as a member of the San Diego City Council and the California State Assembly.
You’re invited to the wedding of Bette Porter and Tina Kennard. 19 years after we first met “The L Word” couple Bette and Tina, the two are finally tying the knot on this week’s “L Word: Generation Q” season 3 finale. Actor Jennifer Beals took a step back this season, only appearing in a few episodes, but fans of the original series and “Generation Q” are finally getting the Tibette endgame they were hoping for.
Joanna Lydgate, partner to Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, gets her moment in the spotlight. Lydgate, and attorney, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of the States United Democracy Center was featured in the Boston Globe, where she talks about her own professional path and her relationship with Healey, one of the first out lesbian governors in the U.S.
Amendment to Dutch constitution will ban LGBTQ+ discrimination. This week, the Upper House of the States General met in Amsterdam and voted overwhelmingly 56–15 to amend the country’s constitution and ban “discrimination against someone because of a disability or sexual orientation.” The amendment now heads for final approval to King Willem-Alexander and appropriate officials.
Aubrey Plaza to host “SNL,” promo features impressions and queer kiss. Plaza is hosting “SNL” this Saturday for the first time, and from this promo, she couldn’t be more excited. Plaza, who starred as lesbian heartthrob Harper in 2020’s “Happiest Season” and has stated that she is attracted to men and women, shares a goofy and passionate kiss with “SNL” cast member Chloe Fineman in the promo for the show. Plaza will be joined by queer and nonbinary musical guest, Sam Smith.
