In June 2022, it was announced that the Stonewall National Monument and Visitor’s Center would open in New York City, celebrating the work of the LGBTQ+ rights movement and the Stonewall rebellion. Nonprofit Pride Live is overseeing the project and the monument will be the “first LGBTQ+ visitor center within the National Parks System.” Here’s some information about the monument and center, including when it’s expected to open and Pride Live’s plans for the space.
Where will it be?
The Stonewall Monument will be located at 51 Christopher Street, part of the famed bar’s original location, which was 51-53 Christopher Street. The current Stonewall Inn is housed at 53 Christopher St.
When will it open?
As of publication, the Stonewall Monument and Museum will open June 28, 2024. The opening will mark 55 years since the important events of the Stonewall rebellion.
Who is behind the monument and museum?
The National Parks Service and the National Parks Conservation Association are working alongside the team at Pride Live. June 24 2016, the Stonewall National Monument was officially recognized as part of the National Park System and is the first LGBTQ+ monument to do so. Pride Live is also behind Stonewall Day and the Stonewall Ambassador’s program. There are a number of corporate sponsors and community partners including AARP, Target, NFL and NYC & Company.
What can visitors expect?
According to renderings, the museum will include a gallery of tributes to activists like Harvey Milk and Sylvia Rivera, interactive exhibits, a screening room, gift shop and more. The opening will take place the weekend of New York City Pride, which is always the last Sunday in June.
