Our weekly column, News is Good, features positive news about the LGBTQ+ community. Too much of what we see in mainstream media coverage focuses on the challenges we face and not the celebrations. Here are a few things we’re excited about this week.
Wisconsin LGBTQ+ caucus looks to update language in the state constitution. Members of the caucus are proposing legislation that updates language about marriage that now states “husband and wife” to “spouses.” The caucus also proposes tackling legal parentage verbiage, including adoption and artificial insemination.
Whitman-Walker Health in Washington D.C. granted $22 million for the new facility. Whitman-Walker Health, which specializes in LGBTQ+ and HIV care, has received over $22 million in federal funds to expand the services of its newly opened Max Robinson Center. The grant comes from the American Rescue Plan’s Capital Projects Fund and will allow the center to substantially expand the number of patients it can service annually.
Seattle OL Reign teammates Jess Fishlock and Tziarra King get married in Wales. Congratulations to professional soccer players and now wives Jess Fishlock and Tziarra King! The couple got married this week in Fishlock’s hometown of Abergavenny, with many of their teammates and fellow soccer stars in attendance.
Kristen Stewart to receive Sundance Visionary Award. Queer actor Stewart, whose latest film, “Love Lies Bleeding,” premieres at Sundance Film Festival in January, will receive one of the Sundance Institute’s highest honors. In a press release, Sundance Institute CEO Joana Vicente said of Stewart, “Kristen’s captivating performances across a wide, diverse body of work make her a truly unique talent. With over 10 Sundance films under her belt, she has always remained committed to the art of independent cinema. We are excited to welcome her back to the Festival and can’t wait to see what she has in store for our 40th year.”
