Our weekly column, News is Good, features positive news about the LGBTQ+ community. Too much of what we see in mainstream media coverage focuses on the challenges we face and not the celebrations. Here are a few things we’re excited about this week.
Gabriel Attal is France’s first out gay prime minister. Attal, 34, who has been serving as the country’s education minister, was chosen by President Emmanuel Macron to replace outgoing PM Élisabeth Borne. Attal is a member of France’s Renaissance political party and in addition to being the first out gay prime minister is also the country’s youngest politician to serve in the role.
New York’s Film Forum to host SAPPH-O-RAMA film series. The Film Forum will host a selection of lesbian and Sapphic films Feb. 2-13. Films will include classics many viewers have not had a chance to see before on the big screen, including “Desert Hearts,” “The Killing of Sister George” and many more. Nonbinary musician Brittany Davis to release debut album. A mix of “R&B, soul and hip-hop influences,” Davis’ debut album “Image Issues” comes out March 1. Davis, who is blind, shared, “as a blind person I’ve never had an actual visual experience, sound is the way I’ve always seen the world.” Their EP “I Choose To Live” scored Davis appearances at SXSW and NPR.
Aspen Gay Ski Week kicks off this weekend. The popular ski event has been around for 47 years in one form or another and has big plans for this year. Participants can expect events like après-ski, dance parties, concerts and of course, skiing and snowboarding.
