Fandoms are known for going to bat for their favorite shows. However, some fans have gone above and beyond to save the shows they love. “Wynonna Earp” premiered in 2016 on Syfy Network and quickly became a beloved series for its complex female characters and centering queer love between two of the show’s main characters. The titular character, Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano), is heir to a fictionalized demon-fighting Wyatt Earp and is tasked to send said demons (or, as they are called in the show, revenants) back to hell. With the help of her sister Waverly (Dom Provost-Chalkley), officer-turned-sheriff Nicole Haught (Katherine Barrell) and an immortal-ish Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon), Wynonna must protect the quirky residents of Purgatory and the rest of the world from being taken over by the evil undead.
Fans rallied after every season for the show and pulled out all the stops when the series’ fourth season was in danger due to financial issues. The #FightForWynonna billboard campaign sprang up in Times Square, and the media picked up on the plucky fandom’s efforts.
The show’s fourth season did indeed come to fruition, but Syfy canceled the series in 2021, an early casualty of what has become known as Cancel Your Gays trend.
However, fans have never stopped campaigning to #BringWynonnaHome and three years after the final episode, Wynonna is back in new place: Tubi.
Tubi, a free streaming channel with an extensive LGBTQ+ library, was started in 2014 and sold to Fox Corporation in 2020. While Tubi has a catalog of 200,000 titles of television shows and films, it also produces its own content, including several LGBTQ+-focused titles. In February 2024, Tubi announced it would air a 90-minute movie special titled “Wynonna Earp: Vengeance.”
The “Wynonna Earp” cast and television series creator and showrunner Emily Andras appeared this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss the special and share the first official trailer.
According to the trailer, Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) is called back to her hometown of Purgatory by her sister Waverly (Dom Provost-Chalkley) to help fight against a newly emerged evil, played by Canadian actor/director/writer, Karen Knox.
In a roundtable interview at SDCC, Provost-Chalkley and Barrell shared that views will be vital to the continued success of “Wynonna Earp” on Tubi.
“We’re going to be very blunt,” Barrell said. “We need metrics and numbers. We need people to watch this….We need 100,000 people to watch it 10 times. That’s actually the math of how many views would be very helpful.”
“Wynonna Earp: Vengeance” will debut on Tubi this fall.
