Our weekly column, News is Good, features positive news about the LGBTQ+ community. Too much of what we see in mainstream media coverage focuses on the challenges we face and not the celebrations. Here are a few things we’re excited about this week.

Philadelphia Gay News celebrates 48 years of publishing. Founded by LGBTQ+ rights leader and News is Out member Mark Segal,the first issue of PGN was published on Jan. 3, 1976. For nearly 50 years, PGN has been reporting on the news that matters to LGBTQ+ Pennsylvanians and beyond. Congrats to the whole PGN team.
Estonia now has same-sex marriage. As of Monday, same-sex marriage is now legal in the country of Estonia. After passing legislation in July, the new law took effect this week, making Estonia is the first Baltic state to allow same-sex marriage. Estonia’s new law also extends adoption rights to same-sex couples.
“My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do?)” heads to Broadway this winter. After a hit run in the U.K., the one person show by Rob Madge will open at the Lyceum Theatre Feb. 27 and run for 16 weeks. According to the Shubert Organization, which owns the Lyceum, the show “follows the journey of a family as they explore their son’s love for all things Disney, theatre, and their identity as a Queer human.” Tickets for the limited run are available now.
The Ohio Lesbian Archives gets a new and expanded home. Since 1989, friends Phebe Beiser and Victoria Ramstetter have been collecting and preserving materials about Ohio’s lesbian community. After moving several times in the last two decades, the collection will now be housed in Cincinnati’s Emanuel Center.
