It Gets Better Project has launched the third year of its “50 States. 50 Grants. 5000 Voices.” initiative, offering grants of up to $10,000 each to middle and high schools across the United States. These grants aim to support “projects that uplift, empower and support the well-being of local LGBTQ+ students.”

This effort is supported by American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (AEO) on behalf of its American Eagle brand and made possible by customer donations collected during Pride Month 2023. MAC Viva Glam Foundation and Tumblr provide additional support for the initiative.

Since its inception in 2022, It Gets Better has distributed over $1 million to educational institutions in 45 states and Canada, with a “special emphasis on prioritizing those states where projects have yet to be funded, including Alaska, Florida, Idaho, Montana and Nevada, as well as Washington D.C.”

Projects funded in the past have included:

·      An LGBTQ+ center build by a school in Louisiana

·      A regional queer youth conference in Texas

·      A Southern California Pride Garden to host educational opportunities centered around queer history and art

·      An LGBTQ+ youth trip to the United Nations in New York City

In a press release, the organization’s Director of Programs and Operations Justin Tindall highlighted the significance of the grants, with the current rise of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment. “In a time when so many in positions of power are attempting to strip rights away from LGBTQ+ students, “50 States. 50 Grants.” presents a unique opportunity for students to work collaboratively with educators to apply for funds dedicated to creating safer, more inclusive, more inviting campuses for all.”

The “50 States. 50 Grants. 5000 Voices.” site walks grant seekers through the process, provides examples of successful grant applications, suggestions for potential projects, key points and how to create a project budget. Applications are open now through April 3 2024.
