Just in time for Pride month, the New York Senate has approved Bill S7974, which would rename a famous West Village subway station in honor of the 1969 Stonewall uprising. The proposed new name, “Christopher Street-Stonewall National Monument Station,” would replace the “Christopher Street-Sheridan Square” stop. The bill has passed through the New York Senate and now heads to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s desk for approval.

The Stonewall uprising began in the early hours of June 28, 1969, after a police raid on the Stonewall Inn establishment and continued in some form over the next six days.

This June marks the 55th anniversary of Stonewall and the official opening of The Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center, which sits next door to the historic landmark, The Stonewall Inn.
