The OutLook is our weekly roundup of political issues that affect the LGBTQ+ community.
- The White House says President Trump has “no plans” to recognize Pride Month in 2025, breaking from past Biden-era acknowledgments. Instead, the Trump Administration announced it will recognize June as Title IX Month, “commemorating women and celebrating their struggle for, and achievement of, equal educational opportunity.”
- Denton, Texas, Mayor Gerard Hudspeth declined to issue a Pride Month proclamation this year, prompting local group Pridenton to turn its planned celebration into a protest. Several City Council members voiced support during the meeting, while Pridenton leaders said the mayor’s refusal contributes to a climate of fear for LGBTQ+ residents.
- Ohio Democrats have introduced new legislation to protect LGBTQ+ rights, including a push to codify marriage equality, support LGBTQ+ youth and parents, and formally recognize “love makes a family.” Lawmakers say the bills counter rising anti-LGBTQ+ efforts across the state.
- Supreme Court case U.S. v. Skrmetti challenging Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming care for minors could impact trans rights nationwide. Advocates warn that even in states like Michigan, current protections aren’t guaranteed and could be rolled back depending on the outcome. A decision is expected in June.
- The Navy is preparing to rename the USNS Harvey Milk, a move ordered by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and first reported by Military.com. The ship, named in 2016 for the late gay rights leader and Navy veteran, is currently undergoing refitting.
